Enchantment:

Shamanic Costume

A shaman wears regalia, some part of which usually imitates an animal—most often a deer, a bird, or a bear. It may include a headdress made of antlers or a band into which feathers of birds have been pierced. The footwear is also symbolic—iron deer hooves, birds’ claws, or bears’ paws. The clothing of the shamans among the Tofalar (Karagasy), Soyet, and Darhat are decorated with representations of human bones—ribs, arm, and finger bones. The shamans of the Goldi-Ude tribe perform the ceremony in a singular shirt and in a front and back apron on which there are representations of snakes, lizards, frogs, and other animals.

Outpouring of Spirits

Once we understand that ‘spirit’ is the word we give to personality or entity that apparently emerges from a series of processes (physical and cultural) we can see why we apply the word in so many contexts. We can meaningfully talk about the spirit of a place, an epoch, an ancestor and more. Does this mean the spirits are ‘real’? The answer is clearly ‘yes’.

Shaman’s Ladder

The shaman climbs the notches in the birch, one after the other, thus successively entering the other celestial regions. To enliven the performance, various episodes are introduced, some of them quite grotesque: the kam offers tobacco to Karakus, the Black Bird, in the shaman’ service, and Karakus drives away the cuckoo; he waters the pura, imitating the sound of a horse drinking; the sixth heaven is the scene of the last comic episode. a hare hunt. In the fifth heaven the shaman has a long conversation with the powerful Yayutsi (the “Supreme Creator”), who reveals several secrets of the future to him; some of these the man communicates aloud, others are murmured. In the sixth heaven the shaman bows to the Moon, and to the Sun in the seventh. He passes through heaven after heaven to the ninth and,if he is really powerful, to the twelfth and even higher; the ascent depends entirely on the shaman’s abilities.

Underworld Dreaming

The temple structure uses a careful direction of light from the surface to penetrate into the lower chambers, with intricate patterns painted on portions of the ceiling with red ochre, following motifs of spots, spirals and honeycombs. One of the main chambers, called “The Holy of Holies”, appears to be oriented such that light from the winter solstice illuminated its façade from the original opening above.

A resonance niche cut in the middle chamber, called the Oracle Room, was possibly designed to project chanting or drumming throughout the rest of the Hypogeum.

The Sleeping Lady of Ħal Saflieni, National Museum of Archaeology, Valletta

A broad range of objects were recovered from the site, including intricately decorated pottery vessels, stone and clay beads, shell buttons, amulets, axe-heads, and carved figures depicting humans and animals. The most notable discovery was the Sleeping Lady, a clay figure thought to represent a mother goddess.

Energy tending to Change

One of the first methods of telling time was by the periodic emanations of the female cynocephalus, which the ancient Egyptian priests used for this purpose . Time is the menstruum in which all material forms arise, transform and finally dissolve.
“The best blood is of the moon, monthly,” says AL. This refers particularly to the Kali aspect of the formula. Best, that is, for works of dissolution or transmutation; best, in other words, for Magick, or Energy tending to Change.

Secret Words

It is therefore not quite certain in what the efficacy of [barbarous] conjurations really lies. The peculiar mental excitement required may be aroused by the perception of the absurdity of the process, and the persistence in it, as when once Frater Perdurabo [Crowley] (at the end of his magical resources) recited “From Greenland’s Icy Mountains” and obtained his result.

“It may be conceded in any case the long strings of formidable words which roar and moan through so many conjurations have a real effect in exalting the consciousness of the magician to the proper pitch — that they should do so is no more extraordinary than music of any kind should do so.

Spell Tablet

Barbarous names. A standard term for the words of power used in many traditional magical rituals, The term originated with the ancient Greeks, for whom barbaroi (the source of our word “barbarian”) simply meant anyone who didn’t speak Greek, and the phrase “barbarous name” was used by them for any word of power in magical ritual that didn’t make sense in their language.

The barbarous names used in magic derive from many different sources, including religious and magical terminology in ancient Egyptian, Hebrew, and Old Persian. Some cannot be traced to any known source at all. Most have been reshaped and distorted over the centuries, to the point that attempts to decipher them rarely produce useful results. Interestingly, this was as true in ancient times as it is in more recent sources; many of the spells in the Graeco-Egyptian magical papyri contain barbarous names that baffle any attempt at interpretation.

Prime Magic

Perhaps the best illustration of the occultist view of thought is by means of the over-worked comparison with a radio wave. The brain then becomes the broadcasting studio from which the thought radiates. We become aware of radio waves only if they are picked up and densified by a suitable receiver, but they exist, nevertheless. All the receiver has done is to make them accessible to our senses, just as printed verses express a poet’s vision in a form others can appreciate. The theory that thoughts, like radio waves, are imprinted on the ether is not without scientific foundation.

The Lamp of Illumination

The Chaosphere is the prime radiant or magic lamp of the adept — a psychic singularity which emitteth the brilliant darkness. It is a purposely created crack in the fabric of reality through which the stuff of Chaos enters our dimension.
Alternatively, it may be considered as a demonstration of the axiom that belief has the power to structure reality.

Triangle of Art

The temple was approximately 16 feet by 8, and 12 high. A small “double- cube” altar of acacia was in the centre of a circle; outside this was a triangle in which it was proposed to get the demon to appear. The room was thick with the smoke of incense, some that of Abramelin, but mostly, in a special censer in the triangle, Dittany of Crete (we decided to use this, as H.P.B. once said that its magical virtue was greater than that of any other herb).

They consist of a gelatinous material enclosed in a delicate membrane, the whole or part of which is furnished with short vibrating hairs (called cilia), by means of which the animalcules swim through the water or convey the minute particles of their food to the orifice of the mouth.

Sea Charm

I spent my childhood, most of it in Anglesey, which should be a place very well known to druids, I reckon. So lived by the sea from a very, very early age. And I’m telling you that because when I was in my teens, without being in contact with anybody else who did anything pagan or magical, I formed a very close relationship with the moon and spent a lot of time watching the moon, became an art student. I’m very old, I should say. So this was in 1970s when dinosaurs still stalked the earth. I became an art student and I was also starting to learn at that time about the Women’s Liberation Movement and about Goddess spirituality, which was just in its infancy in this country anyway, at that point, feminist spirituality. So as a fine arts student, the subject for my work became the moon, and my own bodily cycles and time cycles. And I thought that was an artistic investigation, but what I couldn’t have guessed was that wonderfully, it led me straight back to my roots by the sea in Anglesey and straight into witchcraft in a working alone, spiritual way.

Female Protective Spirit

The foul-mouthed ones, steeped in evil acts,
Who out of enmity, revile, in this world,
A woman, the sole mother of the three worlds,
A gentle giver of true pleasure,
They, because of this alone, will remain
In a far-off, deep hell called Terrible,
Tormented forever, crying,
Their bodies burned by many fires, for three eons.
On the other hand, women’s virtue,
Which embraces all beings, should be spoken of‍ —
Be it the compassion or the protectiveness,
Which is established in their minds.
Whether one is a friend or a stranger,
She nourishes one with alms.
If she has such nature,
The woman is no other than Vajrayoginī.

Earth Spirit

Nothing on earth was a mere “thing.” Every being had its own divine, numinous subjectivity, its self, its center, its unique identity. Every being was a presence to every other being. Among the more massive civilizations, China gave clearest expression to this intimacy of beings with each other in its splendid concept of Jen, a word that requires translation according to context by a long list of terms in English, terms such as love, goodness, human-heartedness, and affection.

The desire to be great can only become organic at a time of vacuity, and by giving it (Sigil) form. Pascal abhorred the abyss but it hounded at his heals. The gulf gulps words, desires, actions and dreams. While my hair stands on end each woeful time The wind gropes through it with its silent screams. Above, below, about me, the great empty depth. A silence latches onto me and won’t let me break loose, While God drafts my nightmares with his skillful pen, Multifaceted nightmares that know no truce. I’m scared to fall into the gaping hole of sleep. What horrors does it hold in its pitch black pit? Infinity lurks below. Through each window it peeps While vertigo is stalking me and my jittery spirit. I long to lose all feeling and embrace nothingness Where Beings and Numbers leave me to peaceful bliss.

Moon Spirit

O Moon that rid’st the night to wake
Before the dawn is pale,
The hamadryad in the brake,
The Satyr in the vale,
Caught in thy net of shadows
What dreams hast thou to show?
Who treads the silent meadows
To worship thee below?
The patter of the rain is hushed,
The wind’s wild dance is done,
Cloud-mountains ruby-red were flushed
About the setting sun:
And now beneath thy argent beam
The wildwood standeth still,
Some spirit of an ancient dream
Breathes from the silent hill.

Witch-Goddess Moon, thy spell invokes
The Ancient Ones of night,
Once more the old stone altar smokes,
The fire is glimmering bright.
Scattered and few thy children be,
Yet gather we unknown
To dance the old round merrily
About the time-worn stone.
We ask no Heaven, we fear no Hell,
Nor mourn our outcast lot,
Treading the mazes of a spell
By priests and men forgot.
